Studen is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Studen has an area of 2.7 km2 (1.0 sq mi). Of this area, 43% is used for agricultural purposes, while 19.6% is forested. The rest of the land, (37.4%) is settled.[3]

Petinesca: Celtic and Roman remains

On Studen's territory, at the SE edge of the Jensberg mountain, Celtic and Roman remains were found, some of which being still visible, on the site of Petinesca. The site comprises a Celtic fortification (Oppidum), and a fortified village dating from the Roman empire, as a regional centre dating back to the 2nd Century B.C. till the 4th Century A.D.

Demographics

Studen has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 2,820.[1] As of 2007, 11.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 14.2%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (89.7%), with French being second most common ( 3.6%) and Italian being third ( 1.5%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 38.8% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (19.1%), the FDP (14.4%) and the Green Party (9%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 23.8% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 66.5% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 9.7%. In Studen about 75.4% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Studen has an unemployment rate of 1.71%. As of 2005, there were 41 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 6 businesses involved in this sector. 316 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 31 businesses in this sector. 864 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 84 businesses in this sector.[3]
